Copa America – Argentina v Colombia

Copa America started last night as Brazil won Bolivia 3-0 in the opening game. Brazil is one of the two big favorites in this tournament and the other favorite starts it’s journey tonight. That team is Argentina and they are playing Colombia in their first game. Both teams have played really well before this tournament so Copa America gets the start it surely deserves. 

Both Argentina and Colombia have won 4 out of their past 5 and are coming to this game in 2 game winning streaks. Argentina  has played 3 games this year, Colombia has played 4. Argentina won Nigaracua 5-1 in their previous gamethat was played just a week ago. Before that they won Morocco 1-0 and lost to Venezuela 3-1. Colombia has won Japan (0-1), Panama (3-0) and Peru (3-0) this year and lost to South Korea (2-1). Argentina has 2,3 goals per game on average in their past 3 and 2,2 in their past 5, while giving away 1,3 per game in past 3 and 0,8 in past 5. Argentina has a really strong team. In the defense they have Nicolas Tagliafico (Ajax) who had a great season with Ajax both in national level and in Champions League. Centre-back Nicolas Otamendi (Manchester City) won the Premier League this season with his club. Players like Leandro Paredes (PSG), Giovani Lo Celso (Real Betis) are really solid for the midfield positions. Especially Lo Celso had amazing season with Real Betis in La Liga. In the attack Argentina has players like Angel Di Maria (PSG), Paulo Dybala (Juventus), Lionel Messi (Barcelona) and Sergio Aguero (Manchester City). 

Colombia doesn’t have a bad team either. Most of their players are playing or used to play in key roles on club level: David Ospina (Napoli), Yerry Mina (Everton), James Rodriguez (Bayern Munich), Juan Cuadrado (Juventus) and Duvan Zapata (Atalanta) just to name few. Zapata came second in goal scoring race in Serie A this season by scoring 23 goals. That was two more than Cristiano Ronaldo scored for Juventus.

Argentina is the second most succesful team in Copa America history. They have 14 cup titles, 14 silver medals and 4 bronze medals. Colombia has one Copa America title, one silver medal and four bronze medals. Argentina has better material, especially going forward. Both teams are in good form, so we might see goals in this game. I think Argentina’s routine and talent all over the field will carry them in to the victory in this game.
